Luther

We watched a movie this week titled Luther, it talked about the rise of Martin Luther and his break away from the Catholic church due to their corrupt practices.

The most important part of Luther's life was when he decided to go to Rome and witnessed all the corruption in the church. In the movie he bought an indulgence for his uncle and prayed all the way up this really long staircase. When he got to the top he looked down and saw all the other people praying and realized how foolish it was to think that a piece of paper could buy you're own way out of Hell. Luther finally made a list compiled of what he considered inappropriate and dishonest practices of the church, and nailed them to the front door of the Castle Church in Wittenburg. Another great achievement of his was when he translated the New Testament of the Bible into German so that all of the people could read the bible and understand it themselves instead of having to listen to priests translate it for them. He believed that everybody had the right to read the Bible and see what it ACTUALLY says.

I really admire Martin Luther mostly because he stood up for what he believed and never backed down. It was said that Luther was reported to be strongly antisemitic in his later years, saying that Jewish homes should be destroyed, their synagogues burned, money confiscated and liberty curtailed. (Wikipedia) I say this because the movie did try to make him seem like someone who loved everybody. He did have a very strong influence on people at the time, in the movie they show a man ( Can't remember his name.) turning all of these people against the church to a point where their throwing rocks through the windows, ripping up tombstones, and hurting the priests. Luther shows up and says "This is not what I was teaching!" the leader responds "This is what the people want!" Luther says "Get out! Before I beat you out!"

Honestly I'm glad they showed this side of Luther, the movie showed that everyone has a limit of being pushed or something that sets them off. And someone misinterpreting his works was Luthers limit. This scene shows how idiotic people can be at thinking before they act.

Like Dandelion Dust part 1

I felt like I needed to blog about this movie from what I've seen so far, since it really hit me at an emotional level. I almost felt like breaking down and crying when watching this movie. I don't know what it is but it really hit me hard. I could hear people laughing about something in the back of the room and I just felt like crying, I got really numb and everything. Oh and to all those people out there who think I'm trying to attention or trying to get people to feel sorry for me. Shut up. This is how I really feel, I know that's hard to believe because I may come off as a dick alot of the time but I mostly just laugh to hide pain and sorrow.

Skid Row

Now I know this is a little late but Mr. Mendenhall has been gracious to let me redeem myself.

The video we watched was all about this guy named John Ferber who is extremely rich and has pretty much all he wants (accessories wise.) Anyway's this show called The Secret Millionaire decides to send him down too Skid Row to experience what living on nothing but about 40 dollars a week is like. For those of you don't know, Skid Row is in California and pretty much everyone there is homeless. NO JOKE.
During the movie when John first got there you could tell that he was pretty nervous and scared. I mean just imagine that you have had all you want for most of you're life and then you have to give it up and live where pretty much everybody is homeless. That would be a major eye opener. And it was for John! He ended up giving alot of his money away at the end of the show too local charities who really show that God cares about everyone. I can tell that John really was a changed man after his whole experience, I just hope he stays that way.

DWYL Chapter 6 & 7

I honestly don't see anything wrong with watching a litle tv once in a while, but if I had to pick something about it I would say that the worst thing about it is watching too much. Sure TV is fun and entertaining but it's not the freaking devil. It can take up alot of your time though. That's why you set a schedule or something for how much TV you watch. The only ways that TV and the internet can effect in a negative way would have to be pornography or well I guess thats it. I don't really get offended by what happens on TV, its not like the people talking on it are speaking directly to me.

If people were to take a look at how much time I spend on the TV/internet and how much time I spend praying to God it would look like about 10:1. (10 being the TV/internet, and 1 being God.) Go ahead and make some comment about how I'm a terrible person and I don't believe in God and everything I do is controlled by the devil. Because that sure seems like the christian way to get someone to believe in God, "Your a terrible person and I'm gonna make you feel even worse by telling you that you're gonna burn for eternity when you die." Said the high and mighty christian.

Bible movie

The movie we watched in bible class seemed to try and show what the media and society all says about chrisitianity. Some of it was good, but it looked as though the main thing people had to say about christianity was, "Why would god make me gay if he hates gays?" or "Why would god make me and atheist if he wants me to believe in him?" It sounded like alot of the people they interviewed did'nt really know much about the bible. They only said what they had heard from the media or their friends. This is understandable, since alot of the media try's to make it seem like anybody who does something for god or because their christian is a moron or insane.

I honestly don't care about the whole "war" going on between christians and non-christians in the media right now. None of them seem to have an exact correct answer for why were here and what were here for.

In conclusion it's all pretty jacked up.

Camp Jesus

This week we watched a movie in bible class about evangelical christians and a camp that they all go to North Dakota. There were three main kids that they showed in the movie, and they all seemed a little "brainwashed" and "smart" to me. I know some people might think I mean that in a "their brainwashed because their christian" way. Just get off your high horse and calm down.

The most ignorant person I saw in the whole movie was the leader of the camp. I really did not like her. It seemed as though she didn't know anything about any other religion except for christianity and she bad talked all the other religions when what she said about them wasn't even true. She should have thought about her own religion and question herself as to why it should be the right one and how. That's what really pissed me off about this movie. People are so ignorant and stubborn that they won't even take the time to really research their own beliefs. They just talk about what they hear on tv and the radio and think they know everything when in reality they don't know jack!

Another issue I wanted to talk about while I'm on here is people who don't let their kids experience life and just force them to believe what they believe. The kids in the movie talk about freedom but they haven't really had the chance to completely explore what the world has to offer. How can you be a parent and talk about freedom when you won't even let your own kid explore who they are. So what if your kid turns out to be an atheist, or their gay, or they aren't the smartest one in their class. Just let them be who they want to be! That's better than controlling them and forcing them to do stuff their unhappy with until they go mental and shoot up their school or hospital or something.

That's all I have to say for now.
